If you have ever watched birds flock or V’s of geese or swans flying, a shoal of fish or racing cyclists positioning themselves in the pack you will have witnessed natural organisation in action.

Any group that wants to move forward in the most efficient manner and be able to change direction swiftly must be aware of their nearest companions, constantly monitoring the smallest changes while slipstreaming to gain the most movement for the least effort.

The difference with business is that if left to it’s own devices it doesn’t self organise.

People start their own systems to get the job done often working inefficiently and creating silos of information that are not available to those creating the direction of movement.

If you have ever taken a cup or glass out of the dishwasher or off the drainer to dry, probably you have been showered with water that gathers in the depression at the bottom of the vessel.

It’s no accident that containers have concave bottoms, how would they stand up if they were convex!

This stems from the primary function of a container. To hold anything that can be put in it. The secondary function may be to stand upright and the simplest way to achieve this is to have a flat or better, concave bottom.

But the thing about pottery and glass is that things made from it are re-usable which hints at them needing to be cleaned.

So a fresh look at the design could be to put a recess in the base with a concave shape extending to the edges but that doesn’t extend past it. Then include some drainage holes, let’s say three equally spaced around the base for water to drain away through. Problem solved.

Cup and glass makers are not going to do this though as it takes longer, uses more materials and crucially, they haven't thought about it.

This is the thing about company structure, the one at the top has to do the thinking, guiding the flock (so to speak) pacing the organisation and coming up with ideas to make day to day operations more efficient and visible.
